Welcome

Threshold Moment

P:"Have mercy on me, God, according to your faithful love! . . . you want truth in the most hidden places; you teach me wisdom in the most secret space." — Psalm 51

P:We start from the ground up! The prophet Nathan confronts King David about his crumbling ethics. David listens and vows to turn things around, confessing and asking God for a new start. This text lays out a foundation for how Israel's prophets and other faith leaders would ideally interact with the political establishment — as a voice for justice and faithfulness to the powerful. This is the foundation for God's house that not only provides a home for God, but for God's community that blesses the world.

How Lovely Is Your Dwelling Place (Refrain)

Invocation

L:God of Bathsheba, we come yearning for wisdom to embrace life despite its tragic complexity.

All:God of the Story, meet us today with living waters abundant to quench your thirst. Amen.

Passing the Peace

Pastor:The Peace of Christ be with you.

All:And also with you.

Pastor:You are invited to pass the peace among you, remembering to pass it to those joining us remotely.

Contemporary Reading

"Building a Foundation" by Ashly Kocher

We handcraft our love with emotion, hard work and existence

Building a foundation or sacred space

Sometimes cracks appear or the foundation starts to crumble

Picking up the fragmented pieces like a scattered puzzle yet to be finished

Even though it takes time and perseverance, you always manage to rise up

Building your space stronger than you ever could imagine

One step at a time…

COMMUNITY PRAYER ~ THE LORD'S PRAYER

Sung in Echo

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Kingdom come

Thy will be done, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven, On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, Give us this day

Our daily bread, Our daily bread

And forgive us all our sins, And forgive us all our sins

And lead us not, And lead us not

In temptation, In temptation

But deliver us from evil, But deliver us from evil

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory

Forever, Forever

And ever, And ever

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Ancient Readings

2 Samuel 12:1-9

1 and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, "There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb that he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meager fare and drink from his cup and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared that for the guest who had come to him." 5 Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, "As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; 6 he shall restore the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and because he had no pity."

7 Nathan said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul; 8 I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your bosom and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah, and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more. 9 Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

Psalm 51:6-12

You desire truth in the inward being;

therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;

wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness;

let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.

Hide your face from my sins,

and blot out all my iniquities.

Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and put a new and right spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from your presence,

and do not take your holy spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Getting Strong

How Lovely Is Your Dwelling Place
Refrain: How lovely is your dwelling place, oh Lord God of Hosts

V1: My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord
My heart and my flesh cry out
Even the sparrow may find a home
The swallow a nest for her young
Your altars, my King and my God

Refrain

V2: How happy are they who dwell in your courts
How happy when you are their strength
Though they might go through the valley of death
They make it a place of springs
Your first rain will bring it to life

Refrain

V3: O, Lord of Hosts, hear my cry
And Hearken, O God of Jacob
One day in your house is worth much more to me
Than Ten Thousand anywhere else
The Lord is my sun and my shield

Refrain x2
