Welcome

Threshold Moment

P:"If you truly reform your ways and your actions… then will I dwell with you in this place, in the land that I gave you long ago to your ancestors for all time." - Jeremiah 1:4-10; 7:1-11

P:Have you ever had a "renovation" project that felt like it would never end? This week's text shows that even God wonders what to do when the foundation and structure is compromised. Will Israel love "God's house" as much as God does, or will Israel continue to enjoy living in the shelter of God's house without maintaining it properly? We know what happened with Israel. How about us?

"How Lovely Is Your Dwelling Place Oh Lord, God, of Hosts"

(Three Times)

Opening Prayer

All:Dwelling and Indwelling God, empower us with your wisdom. Fill us with a spirit of humility. Encourage us to wait with patience. Strengthen us to live in trust of you. Come, and dwell with us and in us that we might dwell in you. Amen.

Passing the Peace

Pastor:The Peace of Christ be with you.

All:And also with you.

Pastor:You are invited to pass the peace among you, remembering to pass it to those joining us remotely.

Better Is One Day
How lovely is Your dwelling place, Oh Lord Almighty
My soul longs and even faints for You
For here my heart is satisfied, within Your presence
I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

One thing I ask, and I would seek, to see Your beauty,
To find You in the place Your glory dwells

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

My heart and flesh cry out,
For You the living God
Your Spirit's water for my soul
I've tasted and I've seen,
Come once again to me.
I will draw near to You.
I will draw near to You

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart. Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling and scatter there Thy cheerful beams.

COMMUNITY PRAYER ~ THE LORD'S PRAYER

Sung in Echo

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Kingdom come

Thy will be done, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven, On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, Give us this day

Our daily bread, Our daily bread

And forgive us all our sins, And forgive us all our sins

And lead us not, And lead us not

Into temptation, Into temptation

But deliver us from evil, But deliver us from evil

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory

Forever, Forever

And ever, And ever

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Ancient Readings

Jeremiah 1:4-10, Jeremiah 7:1-11

Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."

Then I said, "Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy." 7But the Lord said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy,' for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord."

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me, "Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: Stand in the gate of the Lord's house, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah, you who enter these gates to worship the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your doings, and let me dwell with you in this place. Do not trust in these deceptive words: "This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord."

For if you truly amend your ways and your doings, if you truly act justly one with another, 6 if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own hurt, then I will dwell with you in this place, in the land that I gave to your ancestors forever and ever.

Here you are, trusting in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, "We are safe!"—only to go on doing all these abominations? Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your sight? I, too, am watching, says the Lord.

Opportunities for Ministry

  • Opportunities where you make a difference: A strong church has members who are actively taking part in ministry and service.
Children's Christmas Craft's Fair: December 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a time when children are invited to the church to make holiday gifts for their family and friends. It takes a bunch of elf volunteers to help the children and the elves often report having as much fun as the children. Even after 46 years, we have some brand new craft projects, along with some old favorites. Please let Jone, Marti, or Vivian know if you are available to help that day between 10:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.
Some activities where laity can take on responsibilities and free up more time for Pastor Michele to concentrate on her clergy roles. Here is a list with what has been identified by our Staff Parish Relations Committee: Writing Articles for Ukiah Daily Journal, Keeping the Congregation Safe, Keeping the Sanctuary a Sanctuary, Tabling at Pride and Community Events, Running Advocacy Workshops, Shopping for Friendship Forward Meals, Concert Series Organizing, Picking up Food for Food Distribution at 10:00 a.m. on Fridays and Organizing Social Hour Volunteers. Please prayerfully consider if your gifts can be used, and connect with Pastor Michele.
  • Elderwell Day Program: Fantastic News Alert!!! We have been awarded a $7,000 grant from the Community Foundation for opening our Elder Well Day Center. Please read Jone's important message below. There are steps we need to take now as we prepare for licensing, and we need as many people to help as possible. Time is of the essence.
  • A Letter from Jone, Ad Board Chair:
"We had some wonderful news about our small Grant application for the Elderwell Day Program and now need to find the energy and commitment to bring this dream to reality! Pastor Michele and I visited an Adult Day Program in Antioch last week and while we were there I was thinking-'this is really great AND we could possibly do something EVEN BETTER!'. We have a fantastic leader, we have a beautiful space and we have a community that needs what we have to offer. What we need now are Church folks who are willing to give a little bit of time and energy to help us get closer to our goal. Building this program is a BIG undertaking, but it will make it more financially possible for us to keep our wonderful Pastor Michele here in Ukiah. Folks, we continue to be at a challenging place financially. Without a functioning tenant in our space, we are not able to continue for much longer with a Full-Time Pastor. BUT-we can possibly create something new that will help us to serve our Community and keep our amazing Pastor Michele. I know you are all busy and many of you have donated hours/years of your time, energy and gifts to keep UUMC going. We need a little bit more from YOU at this critical time. Volunteer hours, making connections and financial donations are all necessary and valuable in our endeavor. Feel free to reach out to me and Pastor Michele TODAY as we keep working to create something new and needed."
  • Pledge: Thank you to everyone who has returned their pledge card. It's not too late if you have not been able to turn one in yet. You can put it in the offering basket, mail it to the office, or email it to Debbie at office@ukiahumc.org.
  • Recycling: Annie is collecting CRV bottles & cans, to benefit Ukiah UMC. So far this year $5,515.81 has been raised through CRV recycling! Text or call Annie 707-513-9634 for pickups and more information.
  • The Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center: If you would like to donate to Building Bridges Homeless Resource Center, below is a list of needed items. All donations can be dropped at HRC M-F, 9-5 or to Trudy's front porch at any time. Thank you to everyone who donates! - Trudy

Go For It!

South:Do all the good you can,
