Come, Oh Holy Spirit, Come

#2124 TFWS

Welcome

Threshold Moment

P:Friends, we gather today for a special occasion in the life of the church: Pentecost! This week is the culmination of our journey through the "Emerge" series where we have focused on metamorphosis and resurrection through the metaphor of the butterfly. We celebrate the life of this beloved community by honoring our traditions and looking to the future with hope, faith, and joy.

“Come Out!” · Mark Miller

Come out! Come out of your comfortable spaces.
Come, meet Jesus in the difficult places.

Questions for Metamorphosis

Liturgist:Through growing pains and awkward phases, we wondered…

All:…am I always going to feel this way?

Liturgist:Before we came to this community, we wondered…

All:…where could I find a spiritual home?

Liturgist:We all come from different backgrounds and hold different views, and we wonder…

All:…how can we faithfully hold space for so many differences of opinion?

Liturgist:We look to the future of our church and our world, and we wonder…

All:…where will God call us to go next?

Liturgist:Then the Spirit of the Divine reminds us,

All:“You are all a part of me. You are wind for soaring and you can emerge to renewed life. Again and again.” Amen.

Passing the Peace

Kay:The Peace of Christ be with you.

All:And also with you.

Pastor:You are invited to pass the peace among you, remembering to pass it to those joining us remotely.

Young & Young at Heart Time

Contemporary Reading

by Jack Kornfield

One of the deepest illusions we live inside is the belief that we must become someone else before we are worthy of love. More healed. More confident. More accomplished. More spiritual.

But listen carefully: You were never meant to earn belonging. You were born into it. The oak tree doesn’t apologize for growing slowly. The river doesn’t question its bends. The moon doesn’t worry about being incomplete. And yet human beings spend entire lifetimes trying to correct their existence. We think we must be fixed before we are welcomed. But wholeness is not something you achieve. It’s something you remember.

In meditation, people often tell me they feel “too messy” to be peaceful. Peace doesn’t come from being perfect. It comes from being honest. You are allowed to be unfinished. You are allowed to be human. You are allowed to struggle and still be holy. The point is not to perfect yourself. The point is to perfect your love.

COMMUNITY PRAYER ~ THE LORD'S PRAYER

Sung in Echo

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Kingdom come

Thy will be done, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven, On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, Give us this day

Our daily bread, Our daily bread

And forgive us all our sins, And forgive us all our sins

And lead us not, And lead us not

Into temptation, Into temptation

But deliver us from evil, But deliver us from evil

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory

Forever, Forever

And ever, And ever

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

PSALMS 104:24-34, INCLUSIVE BIBLE

YHWH, what variety you have created, arranging everything so wisely! The earth is filled with your creativity! There’s the vast expanse of the sea, teeming with countless creatures, living things large and small, with the ships going to and fro, and Leviathon whom you made to frolic there. All creatures depend on you to feed them at the proper time. Give it to them – they gather it up. Open your hand – they are well satisfied. Hide your face – they are terrified. Take away your breath – they die and return to dust. Send back your breath – fresh life begins and you renew the face of the earth. Glory forever to YHWH! May you find joy in your creation! You glance at the earth and it trembles; you touch the mountains and they smoke! I will sing to you all my life, I will make music for my God as long as I live. May these reflections of mine give God as much pleasure as God gives me!

ACTS 2:1-4, AND 10:34-36

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every people anyone who is in awe of God and practices righteousness is acceptable to God. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ — Lord of all.

I COR. 12:4-13, INCLUSIVE BIBLE

There is a variety of gifts, but always the same Spirit. There is a variety of ministries, but we serve the same One. There is a variety of outcomes, but the same God is working in all of them. To each person is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

To one, the Spirit gives wisdom in discourse, to another, the word of knowledge through the same Spirit. Through the Spirit, one person receives faith; through the same Spirit, another is given the gift of healing; and still another, miraculous powers. Prophecy is given to one; to another, power to distinguish one spirit from another. One receives the gift of tongues; another, that of interpreting tongues. But it is one and the same Spirit who produces all these gifts and distributes them as she wills.

The body is one, even though it has many parts; all the parts – many though they are – comprise a single body. And so it is with Christ. It was by one Spirit that all of us, whether we are Jews or Greeks, slaves or citizens, were baptized into one body. All of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.
