Celebrate Love

#2073 TFWS

Welcome

Threshold Moment

Pastor:It is our Creating God who made all the trees that grow beautiful and good. Creator made the mighty rivers and the tiny creeks that flow with sustaining waters. God made all people as well, with beauty and goodness. We have been blessed with the interdependence of one with another, being made one in Love.

“Let Love Be” · Laurie Bayen

Let Love Be, Let us do Justice, Hold to what is good
Let us love one another as a family,
Let us welcome the stranger as our own

Call to Worship

Liturgist:We gather to worship, to raise our limbs in praise like mighty cedars.

All:Though we grow upward, we are dwarfed by creation.

Liturgist:May this hour reconnect us to our roots and tie us more closely to earth.

All:May our love for you, O God, stir in us our primal memory of water, wind, earth, and fire.

Liturgist:All creation is singing the glory of God.

All:Let us join the chorus. Amen.

Passing the Peace

Gwen:The Peace of Christ be with you.

All:And also with you.

Gwen:You are invited to pass the peace among you, remembering to pass it to those joining us remotely.

Excerpt for Rivers and Streams

by Walt Whitman

Rivers! Oh the rivers!

I know best of all the rivers,

The river and bay are always a great attraction to me,

The water everywhere I travel in this country is the best part.

And there seems no end of it—

These interminable rivers great and small, ample and sufficient,

Plenteous waters, very clean and pure, of a sky-blue color,

Exquisitely polished, silvery, now narrowing, now expanding,

The ample spread and infinite variety, free and floating, of the more immediate views,

A countless river series—everything moving, yet so easy, and such plenty of room!

COMMUNITY PRAYER ~ THE LORD’S PRAYER

Sung in Echo

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Kingdom come

Thy will be done, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven, On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, Give us this day

Our daily bread, Our daily bread

And forgive us all our sins, And forgive us all our sins

And lead us not, And lead us not

Into temptation, Into temptation

But deliver us from evil, But deliver us from evil

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory

Forever, Forever

And ever, And ever

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

EZEKIEL 31:1-14 (NRSVUE)

In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his hordes:

Whom are you like in your greatness? Consider Assyria, a cedar of Lebanon, with fair branches and forest shade, and of great height, its top among the clouds. The waters nourished it; the deep made it grow tall, flowing with its rivers around the place it was planted, sending forth its streams to all the trees of the field. So it towered high above all the trees of the field; its boughs grew large and its branches long, from abundant water in its shoots.

All the birds of the air made their nests in its boughs; under its branches all the animals of the field gave birth to their young, and in its shade all great nations lived. It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches, for its roots went down to abundant water.

The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it nor the fir trees equal its boughs; the plane trees were as nothing compared with its branches; no tree in the garden of God was like it in beauty. I made it beautiful with its mass of branches, the envy of all the trees of Eden that were in the garden of God.

Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because it towered high and set its top among the clouds and its heart was proud of its height, I gave it into the hand of the prince of the nations; he has dealt with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. Foreigners from the most terrible of the nations have cut it down and left it. On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs lie broken in all the watercourses of the land, and all the peoples of the earth went away from its shade and left it.

On its fallen trunk settle all the birds of the air, and among its boughs lodge all the wild animals.

All this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to lofty height or set their tops among the clouds and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height.

ROMANS 13:8-14 (THE MESSAGE)

Don’t run up debts, except for the huge debt of love you owe each other. When you love others, you complete what the law has been after all along. The law code—don’t sleep with another person’s spouse, don’t take someone’s life, don’t take what isn’t yours, don’t always be wanting what you don’t have, and any other “don’t” you can think of—finally adds up to this: Love other people as well as you do yourself. You can’t go wrong when you love others. When you add up everything in the law code, the sum total is love.

But make sure that you don’t get so absorbed and exhausted in taking care of all your day-by-day obligations that you lose track of the time and doze off, oblivious to God. The night is about over, dawn is about to break. Be up and awake to what God is doing! God is putting the finishing touches on the salvation work he began when we first believed. We can’t afford to waste a minute, must not squander these precious daylight hours in frivolity and indulgence, in sleeping around and dissipation, in bickering and grabbing everything in sight. Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ, and be up and about!
