Humble Thyself In the Sight of the Lord

Welcome

Threshold Moment

Pastor:Our Creator’s ways diverge from the way we have tried living. God’s ways preserve and protect those who live downstream. God’s ways sustain and provide all the way from the spring to the ocean. God’s ways are just, showing us the way toward a future of hope and joy. We are strengthened as we develop new habits. We are healed as we learn to let go of what has not worked.

“Let Love Be” · Laurie Bayen

Let Love Be, Let us do Justice, Hold to what is good
Let us love one another as a family,
Let us welcome the stranger as our own

Call to Worship

Liturgist:Great Shepherd, you have made us in your image and likeness.

All:You have placed your flocks and fields in our care.

Liturgist:Draw us closer to you at this hour.

All:Hear our cries for justice and righteousness for all your creation.

Liturgist:Be our path and guide our feet, lest we stray or muddy the waters.

All:Receive our disciplines of care for your creatures as acts of worship. Amen.

Passing the Peace

Gwen:The Peace of Christ be with you.

All:And also with you.

Gwen:You are invited to pass the peace among you, remembering to pass it to those joining us remotely.

Excerpt for Rivers and Streams

by Walt Whitman

Oh! the memories of rivers,

I loved well the stately and rapid river, the majestic and moving river,

I have never lived away from a big river,

The water is my favorite recreation,

I was there—I saw it all—I felt the odor of it steal about me, envelope me,

I have been there in the presence of all its thousand and one changes of color;

Only by such-gathered lights and shades can anyone really know, appreciate, enter into, the fine tones of meaning—

That is, by actually living, breathing, bathing, in the life of it!

COMMUNITY PRAYER ~ THE LORD’S PRAYER

Sung in Echo

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Kingdom come

Thy will be done, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven, On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, Give us this day

Our daily bread, Our daily bread

And forgive us all our sins, And forgive us all our sins

And lead us not, And lead us not

Into temptation, Into temptation

But deliver us from evil, But deliver us from evil

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory

Forever, Forever

And ever, And ever

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Ancient Readings

EZEKIEL 34:11-18 (NRSVUE)

11For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep and will sort them out. 12As shepherds sort out their flocks when they are among scattered sheep, so I will sort out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries and bring them into their own land, and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. 14I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. 16I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strays, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.

17As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord God: I shall judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and goats: 18Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture? When you drink of clear water, must you foul the rest with your feet?

ROMANS 14:13-14 & 19-23 (THE MESSAGE)

13-14Forget about deciding what’s right for each other. Here’s what you need to be concerned about: that you don’t get in the way of someone else, making life more difficult than it already is. I’m convinced—Jesus convinced me!—that everything as it is in itself is holy. We, of course, by the way we treat it or talk about it, can contaminate it.

19-21So let’s agree to use all our energy in getting along with each other. Help others with encouraging words; don’t drag them down by finding fault. You’re certainly not going to permit an argument over what is served or not served at supper to wreck God’s work among you, are you? I said it before and I’ll say it again: All food is good, but it can turn bad if you use it badly, if you use it to trip others up and send them sprawling. When you sit down to a meal, your primary concern should not be to feed your own face but to share the life of Jesus. So be sensitive and courteous to the others who are eating. Don’t eat or say or do things that might interfere with the free exchange of love.

22-23Cultivate your own relationship with God, but don’t impose it on others. You’re fortunate if your behavior and your belief are coherent. But if you’re not sure, if you notice that you are acting in ways inconsistent with what you believe—some days trying to impose your opinions on others, other days just trying to please them—then you know that you’re out of line. If the way you live isn’t consistent with what you believe, then it’s wrong.
