Welcome

Threshold Moment

P:Welcome back for our worship series that features Jesus’ “famous last words” from the table of his last meal as recounted in the Gospel of John. For the disciples, it had been three years of watching the actions of Jesus–his teaching, his healing, his feeding, his redeeming love. But the disciples still can’t seem to understand. “Show us God,” they say at that table. So Jesus tries to help them understand that whenever they have witnessed his actions, they have seen God. Then he offers a shocking statement of trust in those who will carry on after he is gone: they will do works like these and even greater. Anyone who asks for assistance to carry out love-in-action in the name of Jesus, will be his Body, his Love, multiplied many times over throughout the world. Incredibly, Jesus trusts us to do this work.

“Let There Be Peace on Earth” · Sy Miller and Jill Jackson

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me;
Let there be peace on earth,
The peace that was meant to be.
With God our creator
We are family,
Let us walk with each other
In perfect harmony.

(Josh)

Your responses are in bold…

There is so much to fix about this world.

We wonder what we have to give that would make any difference.

Like Jesus’ disciples, sometimes we are not sure what to do.

It feels like a daunting task.

But Jesus reminds us that just sitting down to have a meal is one way to be God’s love.

We are called to give in the ways we can, treating each other…

as neighbors,

as neighbors.

Not “others.”

Not “others.”

Let peace begin with me,
Let this be the moment now;
With every step I take,
Let this be my solemn vow:
To take each moment and live each moment
In peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.

Passing the Peace

P:The Peace of Christ be with you.

All:And also with you.

P:You are invited to pass the peace among you, remembering to pass it to those joining us remotely.

Contemporary Reading (Liturgist)

by Henri Nouwen

“In our world full of strangers, estranged from their own past, culture and country, from their neighbors, friends and family, from their deepest self and their God, we witness a painful search for a hospitable place where life can be lived without fear and where community can be found.”

COMMUNITY PRAYER ~ THE LORD’S PRAYER

Sung in Echo

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Kingdom come

Thy will be done, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven, On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day, Give us this day

Our daily bread, Our daily bread

And forgive us all our sins, And forgive us all our sins

And lead us not, And lead us not

Into temptation, Into temptation

But deliver us from evil, But deliver us from evil

For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory

Forever, Forever

And ever, And ever

Our Mother, Father, Our Mother, Father

Who art in heaven, Who art in heaven

Hallowed be thy name, Hallowed be thy name

Ancient Readings

John 14:8-14 (NRSVUE)

Liturgist: “Rabbi,” Philip said, “show us Abba God, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and still you don’t know me? Whoever has seen me has seen Abba God. How can you say, ‘Show us your Abba’? Don’t you believe that I am in Abba God and God is in me? The words I speak are not spoken of myself; it is Abba God, living in me, who is accomplishing the works of God. Believe me that I am in God and God is in me, or else believe because of the works I do.

The truth of the matter is, anyone who has faith in me will do the works I do— and greater works besides. Why? Because I go to Abba God, and whatever you ask in my name I will do, so that God may be glorified in me. Anything you ask in my name I will do.
